BCS Playoff Proposal

PLAYitOFF.org proposes a 10-team playoff, with automatic qualifiers identical to the current BCS system.

The conference champions of the ACC, Big 12, Big East, Big Ten, Pac-10, and SEC shall each earn an automatic slot in the proposed playoff system, and a bye through the first round of games. The remaining four teams shall be chosen first by using the automatic qualifiers of the current BCS system.  After those automatic qualifiers are exhausted, the remaining teams shall be automatically selected using the highest ranked teams in the final BCS rankings, which are not champions of the six automatic qualifying conferences or already selected via automatic qualifiers, except that no conference shall send more than two teams to the BCS Playoffs.

Playoff Schedule

Dec. 11-17 – At-Large Games – 4 At-Large teams play two opening round playoff games at bowl sites TBD.

Dec. 18-24 – Quarterfinal Games – Six conference champions and two remaining At-Large teams play four second round playoff games at bowl sites TBD.  One of the four sites shall be the Sugar, Fiesta, or Orange Bowl, on a rotating basis every three years.

Jan. 1 – Semi-final Games – 4 remaining teams play in 2 games at 2 bowl sites.  One site will be the Rose Bowl, each year.  The other site shall be the Sugar, Fiesta, or Orange Bowl, on a rotating basis every three years.

Jan. 8-10 – National Championship Game – Remaining 2 teams will play in a national championship game at the Sugar, Fiesta, or Orange Bowl, on a rotating basis every three years.

Playoff Pairings

The four at-large teams shall be paired with the highest ranked team in the BCS standings playing the lowest ranked team in the BCS standings and the two other at-large teams playing each other.  For the quarter-final games, all eight teams will be (re)seeded according to the final BCS standings (i.e. an at-large team may be seeded higher than a conference champion).  At that time, an eight-team bracket will be created with the top seed playing the #8 seed, the #2 seed playing the #7 seed, etc.  Teams shall not be re-seeded after the quarterfinal games (see bracket below).

Proposed Bracket

Selection of Host sites for Playoff Games

To maintain longstanding tradition, the Rose Bowl shall always be played on New Year’s Day.  To do so, it shall always host a semi-final game under the proposed system.  The remaining three current BCS bowls (Sugar, Fiesta, and Orange) will rotate hosting of the championship game, remaining semifinal game, and a quarterfinal game.  Bowl hosts for the remaining 5 games shall be determined via the BCS committee.

Revenue & Governance

Revenue distribution and governance mechanisms shall not be changed from the current BCS system.
